Microdevelopers Filling A Gap In The Growing Housing Market

In the City of Cape Town alone, almost 500,000 people are on a housing waiting list. Government subsidised housing would not be able to meet the growing demand evident in the increase of backyard dwellers, informal settlements and a need for decent affordable housing.

Who is going to address the housing crisis in South Africa? Who is filling the gap in the growing housing market?

Well, we think we might have an idea… Have you ever heard of a microdeveloper or a small-scale developer?

It is a phenomenon happening throughout our cities but particularly in our township areas where existing landlords and new entrepreneurs in the space are taking existing township property stock and redeveloping these into higher density affordable rental units.

“South Africa has a dying need for affordable, dignified housing and microdevelopers could be the key that unlocks this”

Quoin Online has partnered up with the Urban Real Estate Research Unit to showcase a Series on small-scale developers in South Africa. In the Series, we hope to explore different and important aspects of microdevelopers including what is involved in the process? Where does the funding come from? Who are some of the key players in this space?

We’re super excited about this Series, here is the intro – we hope you enjoy it!
